Consumer Unit & Fuse Board upgrades

Often referred to as a fuse box, the central component of your home’s electrical system is now commonly called a consumer unit. It distributes power to the various circuits that supply the electrical devices in your home. The consumer unit plays a crucial safety role by protecting you from electric shocks, burns, and potential fires in the event of a fault.

Electrical installations should be inspected every 10 years, and every 5 years for rental and commercial properties. If you’re moving into a new home, it is an excellent opportunity to evaluate whether the consumer unit is still providing the safety and functionality you need.

We will upgrade your consumer unit to meet the current regulations which will include Type A RCBO circuit breakers and surge protection.

Full & Part Rewires

Rewiring a house offers several benefits to homeowners:

  • Safety: Old wiring can pose serious safety hazards, including the risk of electrical fires and shocks. Rewiring ensures that the electrical system meets current safety standards.
  • Increased Capacity: Modern homes require more power due to the use of various electronic devices and appliances. Rewiring allows for increased capacity to handle these demands.
  • Improved Efficiency: New wiring can enhance energy efficiency, potentially lowering electricity bills and reducing the risk of circuit overloads.
  • Enhanced Functionality: Rewiring can provide more outlets and circuits, making it easier to use multiple devices without overloading the system.
  • Increased Property Value: A newly wired home can be more attractive to buyers, potentially increasing its market value.
  • Future-Proofing: Rewiring prepares the home for future technological advancements and additional electrical needs.

Overall, rewiring is a proactive step that enhances safety, efficiency, and convenience in a home.

Testing, Inspection & Fault Finding

Ensuring the safety of your electrical installation is crucial for your protection. The best way to assess this is by having a qualified electrician conduct an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). In the UK, homeowners should have this report done every 10 years, while commercial and rented properties require it every 5 years. It's also advisable to obtain an EICR before selling a property to inform potential buyers about the electrical condition. Commercial properties typically need more frequent inspections, and certain types of homes, like those with thatched roofs, may require an EICR for insurance purposes.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) consists of two main components: visual inspections and electrical tests. During the visual checks, we examine lights and sockets for damage, assess wiring, bonding, and earthing, and evaluate the consumer unit to ensure it complies with current safety regulations. The electrical tests involve introducing a current into the circuit to measure earthing resistance and check the insulation of the wiring. We also verify the correct polarity of the wires and ensure the RCD (trip switch) functions properly within specified parameters.

After each inspection, we provide a comprehensive report that can be shared with insurers and tenants. If any safety issues are identified they are included in the report.
